چکیده
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have benefited from a tremendous increase in popularity over the past decade, which has inspired their application toward many novel and unique use cases. One of them is UAVs meteorological research, particular for wind measurement. Research this field using quadcopter shown promising results. However, most results literature suffer three main drawbacks. First, experiments are performed as numerical simulations or tunnels. Such limited validity real-life conditions. Second, it almost always assumed that drone stationary, limits measurements spatially. Third, no attempts at estimating vertical made. Overcoming these limitations offer an opportunity to gain significant value measurements. We address shortcomings by proposing new dynamic model-based approach, relies on assumption thrust can be measured estimated, while drag related air speed. Moreover, proposed method tested empirical data gathered DJI Phantom 4 drone. During hovering, our leads precision accuracy comparable existing methods tilt estimate wind. At same time, able moving. This paves way uses UAVs, such measurement shear profiles, knowledge relevant Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) meteorology. Additionally, since commercial off-the-shelf used, methodology replicated others without any need custom hardware development modifications.

Atmospheric Sampling on Ascension Island Using Multirotor UAVs
As part of an NERC-funded project investigating the southern methane anomaly, a team drawn from the Universities of Bristol, Birmingham and Royal Holloway flew small unmanned multirotors from Ascension Island for the purposes of atmospheric sampling. The objective of these flights was to collect air samples from below, within and above a persistent atmospheric feature, the Trade Wind Inversion,...
متن کاملAutonomous Recovery of a Fixed-Wing UAV Using a Net Suspended by Two Multirotor UAVs
This article presents a novel recovery method for fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), aimed at enabling operations from marine vessels. Instead of using the conventional method of using a fixed net on the ship deck, we propose to suspend a net under two cooperative multirotor UAVs. While keeping their relative formation, the multirotor UAVs are able to intercept the incoming fixed-wing ...
متن کاملAttitude Estimation and Control of VTOL UAVs
The theoretical challenge involved in the operation of VTOL UAVs is often divided into two main problems. The first problem involves the development of an estimation scheme which can accurately recover the orientation, or angular position, of the aircraft. The second problem involves the development of algorithms which can be used to reliably control the orientation and/or the position of the v...
متن کاملAutonomous Path Planning and Estimation using UAVs
The main contribution of this work is an online path planning framework for cooperative search and localization using unmanned aerial vehicles. In this work, a team of vehicles is used to cooperatively search for a single stationary target. A vision-based sensing system, that incorporates position and attitude uncertainty, is used to develop probabilistic likelihood functions. By accounting for...
متن کاملModel-based Design Development and Control of a Wind Resistant Multirotor UAV
With applications towards search and rescue missions, the main objective of this thesis work is to provide a suitable multirotor UAV design. To such ends, the UAV’s ability to resist wind disturbances is identified as a reason for concern and is therefore the main focus of the design process. A model-based design approach is taken, to which an advanced multirotor simulator, realistic wind scena...
